Wimbledon 2016: Marcus Willis Loses to Roger Federer

British qualifier and the world number 772 Marcus Willis who finished six rounds of qualifying and the first-round proper, was defeated 6-0 6-3 6-4 in round two by Roger Federer in the 2016 Wimbledon championships. 25-year-old Willis will take home a reward of £50 000 for making it to the second round.

World number 3 Federer could see himself playing another Briton as he waits to play either Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov or Dan Evans.

Willis has earned less as a tennis player than a tennis coach this year. His 2016 rewards to date is estimated at about £220, before his spectacular improvement in fortunes over the past two weeks.

World Ranking After Wimbledon 2016

Willis’ world ranking is also expected to rise to around 416. The new world rankings will be confirmed after Wimbledon ends on July 10, 2016. The British number 23 from Wokingham, England, was in danger of suffering a humiliating defeat after he lost seven games in a row. But the Briton collected himself successfully to test Federer.

Willis said he was playing well at first and he settled into the match, but is disappointed that he lost. He didn’t play as well as he could but he held his head high. He further noted that he will continue doing what he’s been doing and there’s life after Wimbledon 2016, therefore he wants more experiences like this.
